Class Reflection

One class activity I remember clearly is when we did a simulation of predation and how prey use camoflauge to their advantage. The activity we did was that the teacher scattered different colored toothpicks across the grass. Some were blue, green, yellow, red, and wood colored. Everyone lined up against the edge of the grass. When the teacher said "go", everyone charged into the area where the toothpicks were. After that, we counted how many of each color we found. We did a couple of trials to make sure our information was reliable. In the end we saw that green and blue were found the least and yellow and wood were found the most. This was because green and blue were similar to the color of the grass. Also yellow and wood contrasted with grass and stood out more to our eyes. That does not mean that they were extremely easy to find because they had the simialr shape of a blade of grass and the ends where sharp. Since the ends were sharp, if you got poked then you slowed down and were more careful. In the wild, that time is all the prey needs to escape. This activity really helped me to visualize what would actually happen in the wild with other animals. That is probably why this experience is so rememberable to me.

current event 2

This article is about two orphaned gorilla being returned home. They were taken away in the first place because there was gorilla killing in 2007. It was during these killings that both the parents of the baby gorillas were killed. They were looked after by caretakers until they decided it was safe enough to return the to Congo National Park. They say that the move was a success and wouldn't have been posible without the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary project staff.
My reaction to this article was joy for the the two baby gorillas. I was happy that so much work was put into their safety and well-being. It also showed me that there are people out there that truly do care about the animals. That gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. I also felt a little worried because I didn't have any idea that people were creating this tremendous of a problem with gorillas. Of course, that worry was taken care of when I read all the about the incredible effort and determination people had for the baby gorillas. In conclusion, the article left me with a good feeling.

Bullying (Man's inhumanity to Man)

I think our society cannot stop bullying because we can't stop human emotions. It's impossible to be happy one hundred percent of the time. When people get angry they tend to show it. Like Jack for Lord of the Flies. He is violent and has a very short temper. Other people turn their anger into something else, like art or poetry. In conclusion, anger is a part of humanity so bullying in inescapable.

This article talks about a new species of fly that was found. According to the article this fly lived about 100 million years ago. It is obviously extinct now but they found the body of the fly that was fossilized in tree sap long ago. Amazingly, even the wings are still there because the tree sap preserved the body in life-like detail. The feature that is so unique about this certain kind of fly is that is has a horn, like a unicorn. That's why it is called the "unicorn" fly. Not only does it have a horn, but it has three eyes on top of the horn!

My reaction to this article was shock. I never thought a fly could have a horn. The fact that it also has three eyes is also mind blowing. I also feel that scientist got lucky because the fly was preserved so well and they were able to study it easily. I think this discovery could help us to understand what that time period was like. Most people are so absorbed with dinosaurs that they forget that other organisms were around at the time too. I hope they find more incredile and unique animals like this one.

What sort of person do you imagine the author of the novel to be?

I imagine the author of the novel to be the type of person that thinks outside of the box. I feel this way because the book is written in a way where it jumps from a current scene to backround information. Also, you only understand the message at the end of the book because the author doesn't just give all the information in the beginning, but she drops one or two small hints at a time.

My favorite subject is science and literature because SunnyD and Kokopelli1015 are very funny and make the class really very enjoyable.
The best book I have ever read was the Mediator series by Meg Cabot.
My favorite food to buy in the cafeteria is cookies (especially chocolate chip).
On the weekend, when my chores are done, I like to go outside and hang out with my friends.
If I had a free airline ticket to go anywhere then I would go Italy because i want to see how real pizza from the land of pizza tastes.
My favorite color is all colors.
If I had a pet it would be a dog and I would name it Ya-Ya.
This year, if I work had enough I would want to get good grades by the end of the year that will impress my parents.
